BOOM!
Scene One

(A classroom at the Institute for the Advancement of Dictatorships. The students sit at their desks. An exam is in progress. Silence, broken only by the scratching of pens. The Instructor stands at the front, looking out of the window at the lake.)

(Suddenly, there is an explosion.)

(A brief, absolute silence. Then dust. A window has shattered. The students look up from their papers.)

The Instructor

(without turning from the window)

You may continue.

(The students look at one another. Then they lower their heads and continue.)

Scene Two

(The Director's office. The Director sits behind his desk. The Instructor stands opposite. Between them, a tray with two cups of coffee.)

The Director
How much damage?
The Instructor
The north wall. Some windows. A door.
The Director
The students?
The Instructor
Unharmed.
The Director
Napoleon?
The Instructor
He slept through it.

(The Director picks up his coffee.)

The Director
Good. I would hate for him to be disturbed.

(A pause.)

The Director
The Swiss will want to be involved.
The Instructor
They already are.
The Director
Of course they are.

(He sets down his cup.)

The Director
Let them do their work.
Scene Three

(A reception room at the Institute. The Director sits. Across from him, a Swiss Officer in a neat uniform.)

The Swiss Officer

We have apprehended two individuals. A man and a woman. They were found in possession of materials consistent with the device.

Fingerprints have been taken. Statements recorded.

The file is complete.

(He places a folder on the table.)

The Swiss Officer
You will find everything in order.
The Director
I am sure we will.
The Swiss Officer
There is the question of jurisdiction.
The Director
Yes.
The Swiss Officer
The incident occurred on your premises.
The Director
It did.

(A pause.)

The Swiss Officer
We are satisfied that the matter can be resolved internally.
The Director
How very reasonable of you.

(The Swiss Officer rises. They shake hands.)

The Swiss Officer
Switzerland values its institutions.
The Director
As we do Switzerland.

(The Swiss Officer leaves. The Director looks at the folder for a moment.)

Scene Four

(The room of the First and the New Student. They stand side by side looking out of the window.)

(Two handcuffed figures are led by the Instructor across the courtyard below. They enter the building.)

The New Student
Who are they?
The First Student
It doesn't matter.

(A pause.)

The New Student
What will happen to them?

(The First Student looks at the closed door.)

The First Student
They will receive an education.
Scene Five

(The meadow outside the Institute. The lake is still.)

(In the centre of the lawn, a guillotine stands in the morning light.)
